Video: Hawk Hill Backside Descent

2023-03-28

A few months ago, I picked up a cheap used GoPro Hero 6 to mount to my bike. Here’s some video from a ride this past weekend.

I love road descents, and the backside of Hawk Hill (a.k.a. Conzelman Road) in the Marin Headlands is a particularly standout segment. From the parking area at the top of Hawk Hill, the one-way road plunges steeply (a sign warns: 18% grade!) and sweeps right, offering expansive views of the sparkling ocean on clear days with the Golden Gate Bridge and the SF skyline off to the left. Further curves and vistas follow in quick succession. Sometimes there can be bits of gravel on the road surface, so it’s definitely a descent to treat with caution.

Having this kind of riding accessible from home is why I’m convinced the SF Bay Area is probably one of the best places to live for road cycling.

Bonus: A short clip of the gorgeous beach and ocean views descending Coastal Trail from Battery Townsley, a little bit later that same morning.
